We would like to share what a good experience we had building our home with Travis and Donna Mitchell, from our first meeting to last, they were very helpful in the whole process. Travis made some great recommendations during the design phase, as a result we have some beautiful glass doors that we would not have known about and as a result, we are able to take advantage of our beautiful view of the river. We contracted with Mitchell Custom Homes to build our home in Mystic Shores. We really liked the fact the bid was all-inclusive. We picked out interior fixtures, tile, granite, rugs, appliances, doors, etc. Everything was included, so when the house was done, it was ready for move in.

First, we toured a number of homes completed by Mitchell Custom Homes with the builder, Travis Mitchell, the architect, Peggy Sampson and the home designer, Donna Mitchell. We were amazed at the plans Peggy drew up for our home based on discussions during the tour. She was easy to work with and we are more than satisfied with the quality of her work.

Next, we worked with Donna Mitchell to pick out the interior choices. They work with local reputable companies and the process was very thorough. We selected what we wanted with no limit on options, like some builders do. Donna was very good about keeping us in line with our budget as well as keeping our style consistent. She was especially good about making sure we both were happy with our choices.

Finally, watching the house go up and seeing how important quality of work is to Travis Mitchell was very comforting. He can be quite picky at times, but that is a good thing. We were able to make a few changes during the process with no problems whatsoever. The house was completed on time and on budget. We settled on the final design of our home and worked with Peggy Sampson at PS Designs, to begin design of our home the winter of 2007. When we finalized our design, we met with Travis. By this time the financial meltdown of 2008 flared and our opportunity had to sit idle until the market settled down. It wasn’t until we felt the market was stable enough that we decided to put our plan in motion. We dusted off the design and reengaged Travis. We finally started site development in late March 2010, and began, what we believe was an extraordinary journey.

From the beginning, Travis was intimately involved and kept us informed of all the activities and when our input was required, he worked with our schedules without sacrificing cost, quality or schedule. Another important aspect of working with Travis is his ability to understand his client’s vision and bring ideas to enhance the project, always with cost and schedule in mind. It’s not unusual for him to come back with a more cost efficient way, method, or concept. He will work with you to insure you get the best value.

Travis’ team of subcontractors was marvelous and we believe them to be the best in the business. We heard numerous times from the subcontractors, that they enjoyed working with Travis and appreciated his attention to the detail of their work By the time we finished the drive, the total build was 5 months and our final cost was on the money. By all accounts, this was a smoothly run project with very few problems from our perspective. We are truly happy to say that the final product exceeded our expectation.

We were still working in Houston in 2010 when Travis built our home so we were unable to watch the daily progress. We trusted Travis to keep us up to date on the progress of our home and to follow our building requests. Travis kept us in the loop via email, phone calls, and pictures. So when we did travel to Mystic Shores to see our house, we knew what to expect.

All of the contractors we met who are associated with Travis Mitchell Homes were kind, helpful, and easy to work with. They all mentioned that Travis is a perfectionist who will not put up with less than their best work. Travis provided us a budget to work with in choosing items like lighting fixtures, doors, tile, and water faucets, and that helped us so much in choosing what matched our taste. Janet in particular appreciated the help Travis’ design expert gave us in making selections and in setting up appointments.

We were hesitant to embark on this process because of the horror stories we heard from friends who had built homes and because the Mitchell Homes we saw far exceeded our $300,000 budget. We trusted Travis to build a quality home and he assured us he would help us stay within our budget (which we pretty much did).

Our new home is more than we expected and Mike especially is impressed by the quality of all aspects of construction. We would recommend Travis Mitchell Homes to those who are not intimidated by having a perfectionist building their homes. Travis added features (like crown molding and vaulted ceilings) that we did not request (but really like), and he would tell us if an idea would detract from the appearance or quality of the home. When we started the process of wanting to build a new home, we looked at a lot of home builders. At first, we thought it was going to be difficult to pick the right home builder. We had been living in Maryland for twenty years when we decided to retire and return to our native state of Texas. We had purchased a lot in Mystic Shores years before, anticipating this move; the question remaining for us was “Who shall we trust to build our ‘dream home’ after all these years of living so far away?”

We searched for a contractor we could rely on to build a quality home, on time and within our budget. After more than just due diligence, Mitchell Custom Homes was the clear choice – and I am glad to say it was also the right choice. Your dedication to customer service became clear when you marked the site for our home without any commitment even before you were awarded the contract. Your recommendations, both before and during construction, were right on and much appreciated. During the course of construction you kept us apprised on progress, were on-site virtually daily, returned defective material you identified although it delayed construction and provided the services of an interior designer to assist with the many choices on materials and colors which we had to make.

We met Travis through our Residential Designer Peggy Sampson and are fortunate that we met him when we did. We were strongly leaning toward another builder that we later learned got into serious problems that impacted his buyers. We chose Travis because he is well organized, professional and sincerely praised by his contractors and even though he is demanding of them, he is their preferred builder; Demands exact attention to detail that meets his level of quality and is quick to re-do an area that is not done to an expert degree of craftsmanship; Was on site or in the area daily and was readily available to subs or to us by phone or email; Is interested in new ideas and stays current with what’s happening in hill country design; Has a good eye for detail and color; Built to more stringent city-level building codes long before builders were required to.

Carliss and I wanted to touch base with you to let you know that our new home in Mystic Shores is now complete. I know you talk to Travis periodically, so you may already be aware of this. The house turned out even better than we expected and needless to say we are extremely proud of it and very grateful to everyone that had a hand in it.

We also wanted to thank you for the wonderful work you did for us in the very beginning of our dream. Your patience and knowledge of home design, as well as your knowledge of the area really helped us put our thoughts and ideas on paper. Just so you know, the home building experience was not nearly as stressful as we had imagined it to be. The entire process of design, decision making and construction went incredibly smooth. Even the obstacles that we had to deal with were, in my opinion, very minor. All this is a credit to you and Travis.

We were now about to begin to meet the Dream Team. Perhaps the strongest aspect of Mitchell Custom Homes is the group of professionals that Travis has assembled. The team consists of Travis, Peggy Sampson, Terri Western and a group of the finest sub-contractors that you could hope to find. Peggy, a designer of custom homes, takes your ideas and creates an absolute work of art, all with patience and professionalism. Terri becomes involved with the many interior and exterior decorating choices to be made. She is an invaluable asset. Travis oversees the entire design process and then rolls all of the choices made into a firm price quote.

Travis works closely with each sub-contractor to hold down labor and material costs without sacrificing quality. This enables him to offer fair and very competitive pricing. We found Travis to be a true hands-on professional. We were impressed with his constant attention to detail, his work being performed by the various crafts, his promise to always maintain a clean job-site and much more. Travis kept us in the loop throughout the construction and frequently sent pictures of the progress being made. Changes that we initiated to the original design were addressed promptly and he never lost patience with our requests.

Travis has an excellent rapport with the Mystic Shores building committee and the Property Owners Association staff. This really comes in handy when it’s time to submit the site-plan drawings and the blueprints for approval. He is highly respected by the sub-contractors that he employs. They work harder for him because they know that he expects and will accept nothing but their finest efforts.

Travis completed our home earlier than promised date and now stands ready to address any warranty issues should they occur. We highly recommend that others allow Mitchell Custom Homes to become their custom builder. He is good to his word and that means a lot when you embark upon a project of this magnitude.

In summary, we came to Mystic Shores in search of a quality builder to construct our dream home, what we received was a beautiful Mitchell Custom Home and a new friend.

If we built another home rest assured we’d certainly choose Travis Mitchell again. And on top of that he and his wife and business partner, Donna, made the whole custom building process a pleasant experience.

The “How”: Travis’ skills as an experienced general contractor were evident and appreciated. Early on, he worked tirelessly and in detailed fashion to nail down the scope of work to eliminate surprises. Travis worked effectively with our designer. He managed his subcontractors’/suppliers’ scopes of work, their schedules, and their issues without any intervention by us. He worked collaboratively with our other contractors (e.g., landscaper, audio/visual). Donna was knowledgeable, efficient, creative, and friendly in working with us on our interior selections. She also effectively documented our decisions to eliminate surprises.

The “When”: We were flexible regarding schedule and thus did not need nor want our contract price to include a premium for a move-in deadline. Nonetheless, even though the contract did not mandate a completion date for Travis, we were delighted that Travis hit our target date.

The “What”: The result is the finest home that we have ever owned. We frequently look at one another and ask, “Can you believe that we get to live here?”
